BREAKING: Edwin Díaz speaks out emotionally after injury – “I’m really disappointed in myself for not being able to please the L.A. fans…”.y1

The Los Angeles Dodgers have once again suffered a major blow in the middle of the 2026 season, as star closeper Edwin Díaz has been officially placed on the injury list due to a problem with his right elbow. But what caused a public outcry wasn’t just the injury – it was the emotional, almost broken, statement from the Puerto Rican star.

According to ESPN, the Dodgers decided to place Díaz on the injury list 15 days after he suffered a serious elbow problem, specifically “loose bodies” (free cartilage fragments/microscopic structures in the joint) causing him pain and significantly reducing his performance.

The team also confirmed that Díaz will undergo surgery, and his return could be delayed until the second half of the season, or even longer depending on his recovery progress. In the context of the Dodgers’ fierce competition in the National League, the absence of a key bullpen player has put the entire shooting system on high alert.

What’s worrying is that this injury wasn’t unexpected.
In recent games, Díaz had shown clear signs of decline. His fastball speed had decreased significantly, accompanied by inconsistent shooting – a rare occurrence for one of MLB’s top closers.

In the game against the Colorado Rockies, things hit a breaking point: Díaz couldn’t score a single out and allowed the opponent to score consecutive points. Immediately after the game, the Dodgers’ coaching staff requested a thorough medical examination.

According to Coach Dave Roberts, the medical team discovered the problem via MRI, but fortunately, there was no serious ligament damage, only cartilage fragments in the elbow joint.

Even so, surgery was still decided upon to avoid long-term risks.

Immediately after the injury announcement, Edwin Díaz shared some emotional words in the locker room – a rare sight from a player known for his strength and explosive performance on the court.

“I’m really disappointed in myself. I came here to help the team win and bring joy to the L.A. fans. But right now, I can’t do that.”

That statement quickly spread throughout the Dodgers fan community, creating a wave of both sympathy and concern.

Díaz didn’t shy away from responsibility. He admitted he had felt “not well” before, when his performance started to decline and his body wasn’t responding as usual.

Joining the Dodgers with the expectation of being the perfect piece for their World Series quest, Díaz has been under immense pressure from day one.

Before that, at the New York Mets, he was one of the most formidable closers in the league. But upon arriving in Los Angeles – where all eyes are on him – every mistake is scrutinized more closely.

In just the first few months of the 2026 season, his ERA skyrocketed, while crucial games failed to deliver the consistency the Dodgers expected.
This injury, therefore, is not just a physical issue – it’s a major blow to the psychology of a star trying to prove his worth.
Without Díaz, the Dodgers’ bullpen is immediately put in a makeshift state. Coach Dave Roberts is forced to rotate other relievers, while the roster already has many other injuries.

Replacements like Jake Eder or the young players called up from Triple-A will have to shoulder greater responsibility than ever before.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers’ goal of competing for the championship remains unchanged – but the road ahead is clearly much more challenging.

Edwin Díaz will undergo surgery and begin his recovery journey. But for him, the biggest challenge probably wasn’t in the operating room – it was overcoming the feeling of “not letting expectations down.”

In the Dodgers locker room, the silence following this injury spoke volumes more than a medical report.

And for the fans, the biggest question now isn’t when Díaz will return… but when he does, will he be the same explosive version as before, or will it be a new, doubtful chapter in a once brilliant career?
