Pittsburgh – At a moment when the Cubs were mired in a 10-game losing streak – the second-longest in MLB this season – Ian Happ rose to the occasion as a true hero. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Happ returned home and wrote a fairytale story by contributing 5 RBIs, helping the Chicago Cubs crush the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-4, officially ending the team’s longest losing streak in years.
This wasn’t just a victory. It was a breath of fresh air for a team heavily doubted and criticized after a terrible run of form.
Ian Happ entered the game in poor form, only .212. However, upon returning to PNC Park – the stadium he had watched since he was a boy in the suburbs of Mt. Lebanon – Happ completely exploded.
In the first quarter, Happ hit a single 2 RBI to give the Cubs the lead. But the decisive moment came in the seventh quarter, when the score was tied 4-4. With two men on the court, Happ punished Yohan Ramírez with a three-point home run, giving the Cubs the lead and setting the stage for a six-point surge in that quarter.
Pinch-hitter Michael Conforto continued his momentum with a two-point home run RBI, and Michael Busch contributed the final RBI. The Cubs, trailing by a tie, turned the seventh quarter into a nightmare for the Pirates.
Speaking about the feeling of playing in his hometown, Happ emotionally shared after the game:
“This is my home court. I grew up watching basketball here. Every time I step into PNC Park, I always have a very special feeling. I feel so much more comfortable and confident.”
With this performance, Happ extended his consecutive on-base streak at Pittsburgh to an impressive 40 games – the longest in MLB history for any player on any court.
A ten-game losing streak had created a tense atmosphere in the Cubs’ locker room. Coach Craig Counsell was forced to rest Happ in the last two games against the Houston Astros to give him a refresh. That decision paid off.
“We needed this win. The team needed it. The players in the locker room needed it,” Coach Counsell said. “This was a great team win. We had a lot of crucial hits – something we’ve been lacking lately.”
Jacob Webb was the game-winning shooter (1-1) with a perfect sniping in the sixth quarter. Jameson Taillon, despite not winning the game, had a respectable performance against his former team.
Ian Happ is not just a hero in one game. He’s proving his worth when the Cubs need him most. As one of the team’s most beloved players thanks to his warrior spirit and outstanding defensive ability (4 Gold Glove), Happ showed that he remains a crucial piece in the Chicago Cubs’ long journey in the 2026 season.
This victory temporarily lifted the Cubs from the bottom of the standings and restored some confidence before continuing their journey. With Nico Hoerner, Alex Bregman, Dansby Swanson, and Pete Crow-Armstrong also contributing significantly (5 Cubs players had at least 2 hits), this was truly a collective victory.
The Pirates, on the other hand, continued to show their inconsistency. Coach Don Kelly – also born in Mt. Lebanon – could only lament: “Happ killed us.”

Although it was only a win, for the Cubs, this could be a crucial turning point. After 10 losses, the psychological pressure was immense, especially after the team had experienced periods of success with long winning streaks.
Ian Happ is currently living proof of the “never give up” spirit. From a player criticized for his declining performance, he has become a hero helping the entire team get back on their feet.
The Cubs will have a chance to continue their momentum when they face the Pirates in the remaining game. Chicago fans are hoping that Happ’s explosive performance will inspire the whole team, helping them return to their strong form from the beginning of the season.
Ian Happ – Hometown Hero. Cubs – Awakened.
