Arlington, Texas, May 28, 2026 – Yordan Alvarez once again proved why he’s considered one of MLB’s most fearsome hitters. The Houston Astros’ Cuban superstar exploded with two home runs in their 4-3 win over the Texas Rangers, marking his second consecutive game with a multi-homer game – the first in his eight-year career.
With these two home runs, Alvarez reached 20 home runs in just 57 games – becoming the fastest Astros player in history to achieve this milestone. He currently leads the AL and shares the MLB lead with Munetaka Murakami.
What truly impressed the Astros locker room was his second home run in the eighth quarter. In a tied game, Alvarez led the quarter with a 3-0 count against left-hander Tyler Alexander. Most hitters would wait for a strike, but Alvarez swung his bat powerfully with a sweeper and hit the ball at 110 mph, straight into the batter’s eye at Globe Life Field.
Jeremy Peña, who witnessed it live from the on-deck circle, couldn’t hide his astonishment:
“Who swings at the count of 3-0 with a slider? And he hit it at 110 mph into the middle of the field. I borderline speechless.”

Teammates Taylor Trammell and Christian Walker, standing in the dugout, burst out laughing at the moment. Walker later called it the perfect “controlled aggression”—
Alvarez knew exactly what he was looking for and didn’t miss when the opportunity arose.
His solo home run in the fourth inning against Jacob deGrom (428 feet) was also incredibly impressive, helping the Astros tie the series at 2-2. This was Alvarez’s third career home run against deGrom—a rare feat.
Alvarez is in devastating form against his fellow state team. In his last three games at Globe Life Field, he had five home runs. After the game, he smiled broadly and said through the interpreter:
“Apparently, I love playing here. I see the ball very clearly here, so the results are very good.”
This season, Alvarez is leading the MLB qualified hitters with an OPS of 1,085 – nearly 80 points higher than the second-place player. He has a batting average of .312, an OBP of .422, and a SLG of .663. Although he struggled initially in May (only .698 OPS), taking a day off due to back pain helped him make a strong comeback.
With a 26-32 record, the Astros are struggling in the AL West. The team’s offense was very poor in May (averaging only 2.7 runs per game). Alvarez is the biggest bright spot, almost single-handedly carrying the team on offense.
Coach Joe Espada praised Alvarez as “really, really good hitter” and commended his intelligence and composure in every at-bat:
“The level of intelligence and composure in his batting is something I haven’t seen in anyone in my career.”
The Astros won their second consecutive game against the Rangers, and Alvarez is leading the team toward their first winning series in a long time.
At 29, Yordan Alvarez is at the peak of his career. He’s not just a pure slugger but also an intelligent hitter, capable of adjusting pitch-to-pitch incredibly quickly – something Jeremy Peña described as “a different level.”
Astors fans are dreaming of an MVP season for “El Yordan.” With his current form, he is perfectly capable of winning this award.
The 4-3 victory against Rangers not only secured an important win but also confirmed a fact: When Yordan Alvarez hits his stride, the entire MLB has something to watch out for.
