MIAMI — Following a nail-biting semi-final game at the World Baseball Classic, Team USA captain Aaron Judge made a statement that sent shockwaves through the baseball world: according to him, the atmosphere at this international tournament was “even bigger and more amazing than the World Series.”
The New York Yankees star’s remarks came shortly after the U.S. defeated the Dominican Republic 2–1 in a dramatic game that went to the final pitch at Loan Depot Park in front of over 36,000 spectators.
“The World Series that I’ve been to… but the atmosphere here, and also when we played Mexico, was bigger and more amazing than the World Series,” Judge said after the game.
“The passion these fans have, when they represent their country and their favorite players… nothing compares.”
That was a powerful statement from one of MLB’s biggest superstars – and a testament to the remarkable growth of the World Baseball Classic, the biggest international baseball tournament.
The semi-final between Team USA and Dominican Republic was considered a true “All-Star Game.”
Both teams fielded 17 players who had previously participated in the MLB All-Star Game, a combined total of 56 All-Star selections, along with 5 MVP titles, 1 Cy Young, 5 Rookie of the Year awards, and 3 batting titles.
This star-studded lineup made fans feel like they were watching a game of future legends.
From the start of the game, Dominican Republic showed explosive form.
In the second inning, Junior Caminero hit a home run to pitcher Paul Skenes, giving the Caribbean team a 1–0 lead. After the inning, he celebrated with an emotional bat flip, showcasing his colorful Latin style.
The contrast between American and Latin styles made the game even more captivating.
On one side was a disciplined team with stars like Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper.
On the other was an explosive display of emotion from Juan Soto and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Team USA responded quickly.
In the fourth inning, the game completely turned around as the USA hit two consecutive home runs:
Gunnar Henderson hit a solo home run to tie the game.
Roman Anthony followed up with a home run.
Two consecutive swings gave the USA a 2–1 lead, and that was all they needed in this incredibly tense pitching game.
Roman Anthony, 21 – the youngest player on the USA team – said after the game that the moment felt like a dream.
“You dream of representing your country in this tournament, and being here today is truly unbelievable.”
Anthony had bought tickets to watch the 2023 WBC Finals in Miami, where Japan defeated the USA 3–2.

Three years later, he was playing on that very same stage.
After taking the lead, Team USA faced an incredibly difficult task: holding on against a formidable offensive lineup.
Paul Skenes started the game for the USA and showed his mettle by escaping a bases-loaded situation on the fourth inning.
Then, the US bullpen kept a clean sheet for the final 4 2/3 innings.
Closer Mason Miller became the hero, throwing 13 of 22 pitches at speeds over 100 mph, before finishing the game with a controversial strikeout against Geraldo Perdomo.
The final pitch appeared to be below strike zone, but umpire Cory Blaser still called a third strike, ending the game to the cheers of the crowd.
Beyond pitching, the game also featured many spectacular defensive plays.
Aaron Judge threw a 95.7 mph pitch from right field to take down Fernando Tatis Jr. at base three.
Judge then dived to catch Juan Soto’s hit.
Julio Rodríguez jumped on the center field wall to steal Judge’s home run.
Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. also had two outstanding defensive plays:
An incredible double play against Soto.
And an outfield grass throw to take down Manny Machado.
These were moments that kept the crowd on their feet.
“A game to remember forever.”
Head coach Mark DeRosa believes this game will be talked about for years to come.
“This is a game we’re going to remember forever, right?” he said.
“We knew this would be a game that’s talked about a lot, probably one of the most watched of all time.”
Even Dominican Republic coach Albert Pujols, an MLB legend, acknowledged the game’s appeal.
“The whole world has seen two teams with the best players in the sport.”
After the game, Aaron Judge gathered the team in the locker room and gave a brief speech.
Team USA now faces the World Baseball Classic final, where they will take on either Venezuela or Italy.
Judge said he sensed the specialness of the semi-final from the start.
“You stand on the court, hear them introduce each name… and you get goosebumps.”
“The other team was like an All-Star team.”
But after all, Team USA held strong.
Now, they are just one win away from becoming World Baseball Classic champions.
And if what happened in Miami is a sign of what’s to come, baseball fans around the world may soon witness a historic final.
