MARACAY — Houston Astros star José Altuve has touched the baseball community by deciding to buy back the old baseball field where he played as a child in Maracay, Aragua State (Venezuela) and donate it to underprivileged children in the area.
The plan is to renovate the field to become a free training ground for children passionate about baseball — the sport that changed Altuve’s life. For the 1990-born star, this is not just a charity project, but also a way to give back to the place that nurtured his dreams.
Altuve was born and raised in Maracay, Venezuela — a city considered one of the country’s “baseball cradles.” As a child, he often practiced with his father on a simple dirt field near his home.
With limited equipment, sometimes just a ball and an old bat, Altuve’s passion for baseball never waned.
“I grew up on a very simple field,” Altuve once shared in an interview. “But there, I learned to love the game.”

From those days practicing on that dirt field, Altuve became one of the greatest players in Astros history.
Altuve’s new project will transform the old field into a small sports complex for teenagers. The plan includes:
Renovating the field and stands
Building batting and pitching areas
Providing free gloves, bats, and balls
Organizing baseball training classes for local children
Altuve says he wants to ensure that every child in Maracay has the chance to touch a baseball — even if their families can’t afford it.
“There are so many kids in Venezuela who love baseball, but not everyone has the opportunity to play,” he said.
“If I can help them have the same opportunities I once had, that would be incredibly meaningful.”
Throughout his Major League Baseball career, Altuve has always mentioned Venezuela and his hometown of Maracay as an important part of his life.
He debuted in MLB in 2011 and quickly became one of the league’s best players, winning numerous major titles including the 2017 American League MVP, multiple All-Star appearances, and two World Series championships.
But despite his success in the US, Altuve maintains strong ties to his homeland. He regularly organizes baseball camps, donates sporting equipment, and supports Venezuelan children in accessing the sport.

This baseball field project is considered one of his most meaningful actions for his home community.
In a message to the Maracay community, Altuve said he hopes the baseball field will become a place where many dreams begin.
“When I was little, I just wanted to play baseball every day,” he said.
“I didn’t know if I could get into MLB. But I knew I loved the game.”
He hopes that one day, one of the kids practicing at this field can step onto the big stage of world baseball.
“Maybe one day, a kid from this field will play in Major League Baseball. If that happens, that would be the greatest thing.”
News of the project quickly spread in Venezuela, where Altuve has long been considered one of the nation’s greatest sporting prides.

Many fans believe this action shows Altuve is not just an MLB superstar, but also a role model for the younger generation.
A local baseball coach in Maracay shared:
“The kids here look at José Altuve and believe they can do it too.”
For Altuve, the new baseball field is more than just a sporting facility.
It’s a symbol of hope—a reminder that talent and passion can emerge from the most humble beginnings.
From a boy playing baseball on a dirt field in Maracay to an MLB superstar, José Altuve’s journey has inspired millions.
And now, by giving back his childhood baseball field to a new generation, he’s helping baseball dreams continue to be nurtured—right where it all began.
