BREAKING: Josh Naylor “Jokes Around” Amidst WBC Controversy – The Story Behind the Controversial Handshake with Cal Raleigh.y1

One of the most attention-grabbing moments at this year’s World Baseball Classic didn’t come from a home run or a breathtaking pitch, but from a seemingly simple gesture: a handshake. When Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh refused to greet his teammate Josh Naylor at home plate, social media erupted in controversy.

However, instead of escalating the situation, Naylor took a completely different approach: turning the controversial moment into a humorous one.

The incident occurred during the quarterfinal game between Team USA and Canada at the WBC.

As Naylor entered the box to prepare for his first inning, he raised his hand as if to greet Raleigh – who was catching behind home plate for Team USA. But, similar to the earlier incident with Randy Arozarena, Raleigh didn’t reciprocate.

This image quickly went viral on social media, leading many to believe there was tension between the Mariners players.

But the reality was quite different.

After the game, Naylor immediately explained that the situation wasn’t confrontational at all.

On the contrary, it was even “planned.”

Naylor revealed that before the game, he texted Raleigh to say he would try waving to him when entering the box. Raleigh’s response was clear:

“Please don’t do that.”

But Naylor decided to try anyway – just to tease his teammate.

After the game, Naylor laughed as he told reporters:

“We were just joking. I was just trying to lighten things up.”

He also emphasized that he and Raleigh remain close friends on the Mariners team.

For Raleigh, refusing handshakes in the WBC wasn’t a personal act.

Raleigh leaves another Seattle Mariners teammate hanging at WBC

According to multiple sources, Team USA players agreed before the tournament that they would not engage in close interaction with opponents on the court, even if it was a teammate from MLB.

This philosophy reflects how many American players approach the tournament: when wearing the national team jersey, they want to focus entirely on playing and representing their country.

This also explains why Raleigh had previously refused to shake hands with Arozarena – another Mariners teammate playing for Mexico.

That moment caused considerable controversy when Arozarena reacted quite strongly in a post-game interview.

But the case with Naylor unfolded in a completely different way.

While many worried that the incident could create tension in the Mariners’ locker room, Naylor’s reaction steered the story in a different direction.

Instead of reacting negatively, he chose to turn the incident into a joke.

After the game, Naylor even called Raleigh:

“one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”

This reaction was quickly praised by MLB fans for helping to ease the tension surrounding the incident.

In an emotionally charged international league like the WBC, where national pride sometimes makes things tense, Naylor’s humor became a memorable moment.

Interestingly, all the players involved in this “handshake drama”—Raleray, Naylor, and Arozarena—have one thing in common.

They are all members of the Seattle Mariners.

After the WBC concludes, these players will quickly return to MLB training camp and prepare for the new season together.

This has led many to believe that the controversial moments at the WBC are simply part of the fierce competition in the international league.

A Small Story That Speaks Louder Than Words

In baseball, sometimes small moments speak volumes about the spirit of the sport.

A refused handshake can become a big social media headline. But how the players react is what really matters.

In this case, Josh Naylor proved that a little humor can defuse tension.

And when the MLB season begins, it’s likely that such moments will simply be a lighthearted anecdote in the Mariners’ locker room.

But in just a few days at the World Baseball Classic, it became one of the most talked-about moments of the tournament.
