BREAKING: “St. Louis is my home” — Lars Nootbaar rejects interest from other teams, affirming his long-term commitment to the Cardinals.y1

ST. LOUIS — Amidst the heated MLB trade market with numerous rumors, one of the most talked-about names in recent days is Lars Nootbaar. However, instead of opening the door to a new chapter in his career, the St. Louis Cardinals’ outfield star has sent a clear message: he wants to stay in St. Louis.

After appearing in several trade scenarios with competing teams, particularly some clubs in the NL West, Nootbaar has expressed his desire to continue playing for the Cardinals — the team that helped him grow and become one of the most beloved faces at Busch Stadium.

In recent days, MLB analysts have mentioned the possibility of Nootbaar becoming a trade target for many teams. Several teams looking to bolster their outfield are reportedly interested in the 28-year-old.

Nootbaar’s constant presence in the transfer rumors stems from St. Louis’s ongoing roster restructuring and the presence of several left-handed players. This has led some experts to believe the Cardinals might consider a trade to balance their roster.

Furthermore, his inconsistent performance this past season, coupled with injuries, has made his trade value a hot topic of discussion. Last season, Nootbaar was rated .234 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs, a figure that fell short of his potential.

Even some major teams like the New York Mets have been linked as a potential destination if the Cardinals decide to open negotiations.

However, Nootbaar’s reaction to the rumors has surprised many.

According to sources close to the team, Nootbaar has made it clear to management that his priority is to continue playing for the Cardinals.

“I’ve always thought St. Louis is where I belong,” Nootbaar shared.

“This is the team that gave me my first chance, where the fans have always supported me even in tough times.”

His statement quickly garnered strong support from the Cardinals fanbase. Over the years, Nootbaar has been known not only for his positive energy on the court but also for his approachable personality, making him one of the most beloved players in the locker room.

“Things aren’t always perfect,” he added.

“But I want to fight alongside this team.”

Nootbaar joined the Cardinals in 2021 and has gradually established himself as a regular starter. He can play multiple outfield positions and is highly regarded for his consistent base play and energetic fighting spirit.

In the 2025 season, he played 135 games, one of the most played seasons of his career.

However, at the end of that season, he underwent surgery on both heels to address Haglund’s deformity – a surgery that could cause him to miss the start of the 2026 season.

This injury is also part of the reason why some teams are being cautious when considering a trade.

But for Nootbaar, recovery and a return to the court with the Cardinals seems more important than any offer.

Given the Cardinals’ recent roster changes, retaining a fan-favorite like Nootbaar could be a huge morale boost.

St. Louis has parted ways with several veterans during the team’s rebuilding process, and the team’s management is trying to build a younger squad for the future.

In that plan, Nootbaar is still considered part of the core group of players.

A member of the Cardinals organization shared:

“Lars isn’t just a good player. He brings energy to the entire locker room.”

Although Nootbaar has expressed a desire to stay, MLB analysts believe the possibility of a future trade hasn’t completely disappeared.

He still has a contract controlling the team until after the 2027 season, making him a valuable asset in the trade market if the Cardinals want to change their strategy.

However, at this point, the message from the player himself is very clear.

“I just want to get back on the court, healthy, and help the Cardinals win,” Nootbaar said.

For fans at Busch Stadium, Nootbaar’s affirmation might be exactly what they wanted to hear during this turbulent period for the team.

Because while trade rumors may come and go, a player’s loyalty to the city and the team always holds special value.

And at least for now, Lars Nootbaar has made that clear:

“As long as the Cardinals still want me here…I want to stay.”
