BOSTON, Massachusetts – In an announcement that plunged the entire Red Sox nation into sadness, legendary broadcaster Don Orsillo officially revealed today that he is battling throat cancer. Notably, Orsillo emotionally shared that he may soon be reunited with his close friend and legendary colleague Jerry Remy.
In a tearful announcement video posted on social media, Orsillo – the familiar voice of the Red Sox for 15 years – spoke in a warm but choked voice:
“I may soon be reunited with him… Jerry Remy. I miss him so much. If I have to go, I hope to be able to sit beside him and commentate on a game together.”
This news immediately brought millions of Red Sox fans to tears. Don Orsillo, 57, is one of the most beloved broadcasters in franchise history. From 2001 to 2015, he and Jerry Remy formed a classic commentary duo, bringing countless moments of joy, sadness, humor, and emotion to fans on television.
Orsillo said the disease was discovered during a recent routine checkup. He is currently undergoing intensive treatment and is optimistic about his chances of recovery. However, having to temporarily stop his beloved work has saddened him greatly.
“My voice is my life. Sitting in the commentary booth at Fenway Park, talking to you all every night is the greatest happiness,” Orsillo shared. “Now I have to stop to fight this disease. I want to thank everyone for all the love they’ve shown me.”

Jerry Remy – Orsillo’s closest friend on air – passed away in October 2021 from lung cancer. The two were icons of the Red Sox for over a decade. Remy’s passing has left a huge void in Orsillo’s heart and the hearts of millions of fans. Orsillo’s mention of Remy during his illness announcement made the story even more touching.
The Red Sox leadership quickly responded. President Sam Kennedy stated:
“Don Orsillo was an integral part of the Red Sox. He wasn’t just a broadcaster, he was family. Our entire organization is praying for him and will support him in every way possible. Fenway Park is always open to welcoming him back.”
Many former colleagues and Red Sox legends also sent their condolences. David Ortiz wrote: “Big Papi praying for you, Don. You are a legend. Stay strong!” Pedro Martinez, Dustin Pedroia, and many other stars also sent heartwarming messages.
Red Sox fans rushed to share fond memories of Orsillo. Many recall the times he and Jerry Remy laughed, joked, and sometimes even shed tears together during historic moments for the team.

Don Orsillo was born in 1968 in Melrose, Massachusetts. He began broadcasting for the Red Sox in 2001 and quickly became a beloved voice thanks to his sincere, witty, and emotional commentary style. After leaving the Red Sox in 2015, he moved on to broadcast for the San Diego Padres but always held a special place in the hearts of Red Sox fans.
In his announcement, Orsillo said he would focus entirely on his treatment in the coming period and hoped to return to the commentary booth when his health permitted. He also sent special thanks to his family, colleagues, and fans who have been with him for many years.
Orsillo’s statement, “Maybe I’ll see him again soon,” is not just a reminder of Jerry Remy, but also a testament to the deep friendship and optimistic spirit of a man who dedicated his life to baseball and the Red Sox.
Currently, the Red Sox Nation is thinking of Don Orsillo with all its love and hope. Whether on air or off, Orsillo’s warm voice and smile have become a beautiful part of the memories of generations of Boston fans.
We send our best wishes for Don Orsillo’s health. We hope he will soon overcome his illness and return to Fenway Park – where he always belonged.
